I know, I know... where have I been hiding and how have I been living in this Korean entertainment world to have only watched this movie in the last month? Ah, really, I make myself speechless sometimes. But better late than never ...
I can imagine how this movie is simply phenomenal for those in high school this year or was in high school during the 80's. I clearly remember watching a few of my own coming-of-age movies during those hormonal grade school and high school summers. Anyone who can recall the movie Now and Then? It's probably the Sunny-equivalent of my generation (and no, don't dare calculate the years on that). I must have watched Now and Then at least 30 times? And each time, I made sure to get emotional at those decidedly classic girl bonding moments. I sure was (and still is) a sucker for all those.
Sunny has the same appeal. High school everything from bad hair days, crazy friends, one sided crushes, stupidity, infinite courage, fights, wounds to promises and really believing that you'll hold true to them 'til the end. And then adult realities from cancer, families, poverty, shame, success, escape through painful regrets ... Yeah, it's Korean and it's on different decades but they're all the same.
I thought the sad love story was especially nice. Who can ever forget those blush-worthy moments?
I guess for some, crying over these pitiful assumptions is supposed to forever wake you up from silly daydreams ... Ahh, how I wish this is the case for me.
So far, all movies with Cha Tae Hyun on them are immensely popular with me. Apparently, Sunny is no exception ^^.
Sunny sure brings you back to open your own treasure cove of technicolor memories. And it makes you wonder if you'll ever have the chance to go back and become that person you sincerely thought you'll become someday. Ahh, I'd recommend watching it on a rainy day when you can drown your teary hiccups with the hammering of raindrops on your windows.
I suppose I can conclude the following:
1. There is no such thing as a normal high school life. It's the hormones.
2. People meet the most remarkable and most memorable friends in high school. And you never really let go of them.
3. People break promises. Friends break promises. And then try to make up for it later on. Or never. And sometimes, that's just ok.
